Keynote: Luck Is No Accident:  Making the Most of Happenstance in Your Life and Career”
John D. Krumboltz, Ph.D., Professor of Education and Psychology at Stanford University,

The goal of career counseling is much more important than just making a career decision—it is to help clients learn to take actions that will create satisfying lives for themselves.  It is not a one-time event.  Clients must learn how to overcome obstacles that block them from trying out new activities.  They need not plan their entire future career—they need to engage in exploratory actions and “get permission” to make mistakes. Clients should be taught how to maximize—not minimize—the impact of unplanned events.

Mythology, Career, and the Technological Age
Nancy Goodman, LPC, NCC, Career and Mental Health Counselor,

“Computers are like old testament Gods”, said the late Joseph Campbell.  “Lots of rules and no mercy!”  Campbell, a famed mythologist credited with coining the phrase “follow your bliss”, believed that the characters, deities, adventures, and challenges described in religion and mythology can help us navigate the ever-changing world of the modern era.  With heroes like Ulysses, Erin Brockovich, and Luke Skywalker to show us the way, Campbell offers insight into the quest for career happiness, even as the way we do work changes at lightening speed.

Using Multi-Media Applications to Improve the Delivery of Career Information
Bridget Brown, Executive Director, America’s Career Resource Network Association
Marc Breton, Career Information Director, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities; iSeek Solutions/CareerOneStop
The use of videos has been an effective medium for adults and youth to explore different career options and develop an educational career plan to achieve those career goals.   The Department of Labor funded the Career Video Consortium for almost 10 years to develop a multimedia library of occupational career videos and more videos are appearing in sites such as YouTube.  Young people seem to be drawn to flashier versions of videos and other multi-media options, but concerns exist about the quality of information being provided.  ACRNA is working with other organizations to develop a partnership to take the best from past efforts, integrate web 2.0 technology and make career exploration more interactive for youth and adults.
